Subgrade Failure is a pavement failure mechanism characterized by the loss of load-bearing capacity of the underlying soil layer due to excessive deformation, moisture infiltration, or inadequate compaction, distinguishing it from other failure types by its origin in the subgrade rather than in the pavement structure itself.
