Sorption-induced Strain

Sorption-Induced Strain is a geomechanical phenomenon in unconventional reservoir engineering characterized by the volumetric deformation of organic-rich shale matrices resulting from the adsorption or absorption of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons or carbon dioxide, into the pore structure, thereby altering the rock’s effective stress and permeability.
