Roof Caving is a controlled geomechanical process in longwall mining whereby the roof strata above the mined coal panel intentionally collapse in a sequential and managed manner to fill the void created by coal extraction, thereby transferring overburden pressure to the adjacent undisturbed coal and minimizing stress concentrations at the face.
