Ribosomal Scanning

Ribosomal Scanning is a molecular mechanism in eukaryotic translation initiation whereby the small ribosomal subunit, after binding to the 5' cap of an mRNA, progressively examines the nucleotide sequence in the 5' to 3' direction to locate the correct start codon, typically the first AUG in optimal context, thereby determining the reading frame for protein synthesis.
