Request Modification

Request Modification is a pragmatic strategy within interlanguage pragmatics that refers to a linguistic device employed by language learners to adjust the directness, politeness, or force of a request through the inclusion of modifiers such as modal verbs, hedged expressions, or syntactic softening, thereby distinguishing it from other speech acts by its focus on the incremental mitigation of face-threatening elements in second language communication.
