Discourse-Driven Pragmatics
1966 - 1992
In Pragmatics from 1966 to 1992, research coalesced around viewing discourse as goal-directed action and social practice. A key emphasis was on plan-based reasoning guiding utterances, while politeness, directives, and social interaction patterns revealed systematic cross-context variation. The analysis of repair sequencing, openings, and the pragmatics–semantics interface demonstrated how context modulates meaning and how conversation structure supports efficient communication. Methodologies blended Conversation Analysis with empirical judgments and cross-cultural comparisons, producing a cohesive, discourse-centered framework that united form, function, and social purpose in everyday talk.
• Theme 1: Planning and intention in discourse — a family of works treats speech acts as goal-directed actions, modeling utterances as plans to affect listeners' beliefs, goals, and actions, aligning plan-based reasoning with broader discourse structure and contextual purpose [6], [5], [11], [15], [12].
• Theme 2: Politeness, directives, and social interaction patterns in pragmatics — systematic variation of directive forms and politeness strategies across social contexts and interlocutor status, including native/non-native judgments and cross-cultural patterns [4], [7], [10], [14], [19].
• Theme 3: Repair, sequencing, and openings in conversation analysis — rules governing the sequencing of openings and the organization of repair and turn-taking in everyday talk [3], [1].
• Theme 4: Pragmatics–semantics interface and meaning in context — exploration of how literal meaning, intention, and pragmatic interpretation interact, with attention to anaphora, binding, irony, and context-dependent interpretation [8], [9], [11], [18], [16].
• Theme 5: Variation, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis — analysis of how discourse features vary with social factors, ideology, and context, including sociolinguistic variables and discourse variants such as ‘and stuff like that’ [20], [19].
