Political Function Exception

The "Political Function Exception" is a judicial doctrine within constitutional law that permits the government to restrict certain rights, such as employment in core sovereign roles, to citizens on the grounds that such positions are integral to the formulation and execution of public policy, thereby distinguishing it from general alienage discrimination by serving a compelling state interest in preserving democratic self-governance.
