Phagophore Formation

Phagophore Formation is a cellular process in the context of autophagy characterized by the de novo assembly and expansion of a cup-shaped double-membrane structure, the phagophore, from specific nucleation sites such as the endoplasmic reticulum, which serves as the precursor to the autophagosome and distinguishes itself from other membrane biogenesis events by its unique initiation through autophagy-related (ATG) protein machinery and its selective engulfment of cytoplasmic cargo.
