Petrography

Petrography is the geological discipline focused on the detailed description and systematic classification of rocks based on their observable characteristics. It involves the macroscopic examination and, critically, the microscopic analysis of rock texture, structure, and mineralogical composition, typically using thin sections and polarized light microscopy, to understand the rock's formation conditions, origin (petrogenesis), and subsequent geological history.
