Ought-to L2 Self

The "Ought-To L2 Self" is a motivational construct within second language acquisition theory that represents the learner’s perception of the language abilities they believe they should attain in order to meet external expectations, fulfill social obligations, or avoid negative outcomes, thus differing from the ideal L2 self by emphasizing duty-based rather than aspiration-based motivation.
