Transplacental and Placental Determinants era
Josef Warkany, a leading figure in mid-20th-century teratology, emphasized transplacental teratogens and maternal–fetal exposure as central determinants of fetal outcomes, shaping surveillance and regulatory responses. John C. Rock, a key figure in placental morphology, helped establish placental structure and pathology as mechanistic lenses for perinatal health and fetal growth assessment. F. P. Hadlock's ultrasound-based fetal biometry and standardized growth references provided the practical framework for cohort surveillance and public health planning in obstetric care. Peter Liggins and Howard Howie demonstrated that antenatal corticosteroids cross the placenta to accelerate fetal lung maturation, marking a pivotal advance in preventive obstetrics and transplacental pharmacology.
