Negative refraction is a physical phenomenon in anisotropic media and photonic crystals wherein electromagnetic waves refract at an interface such that the refracted wave vector and the incident wave vector lie on opposite sides of the surface normal, resulting in a negative angle of refraction relative to the normal direction.
