Microstructural Thermodynamics is a theoretical framework within continuum thermodynamics that specifically accounts for the thermodynamic behavior and evolution of internal microstructural variables, such as defects, phases, and grain boundaries, by augmenting the classical balance laws with additional state variables and dissipation mechanisms associated with microscale processes.
