Microplastic Weathering

Microplastic Weathering is a biogeochemical degradation process in which environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation, temperature fluctuations, mechanical abrasion, and microbial activity induce physical and chemical alterations to the surface and structure of microplastic particles, distinguishing it from primary microplastic formation by involving post-emission transformations that affect particle morphology, composition, and ecological interactions.
