Micro-hydropower
Micro-hydropower is a specialized field of research and engineering focused on the generation of electricity using hydroelectric systems with relatively low power outputs, typically ranging from a few kilowatts up to 100 kilowatts. This academic concept investigates the technical, environmental, and socio-economic aspects of harnessing energy from small water bodies or flows for decentralized power generation. Research within this domain encompasses system design optimization, development of efficient low-head turbine technologies, assessment of ecological impacts on local aquatic environments, and analysis of its potential for providing off-grid energy access and contributing to sustainable rural development. Key characteristics studied include its modularity, adaptability to diverse geographical sites with limited civil infrastructure, and role in enhancing energy security and resilience in remote communities. Its significance lies in its contribution to renewable energy portfolios, particularly for distributed generation and electrification in areas where large-scale grid connection is unfeasible or undesirable.
