Message Passing Architectures is a type of parallel computer architecture in which processing units communicate and coordinate by explicitly sending and receiving data packets through an interconnection network, distinguishing it from shared-memory architectures by relying on distributed memory and message-exchange protocols for inter-process synchronization and data transfer.
