Mesoscale Stirring

Mesoscale Stirring is a geophysical fluid dynamic process, within the context of mesoscale ocean dynamics, in which lateral gradients of temperature and salinity are reorganized through the advective action of coherent eddies and transient flow structures at spatial scales of approximately 10–100 kilometers, thereby enhancing the effective diffusivity of scalar properties along isopycnal surfaces without necessarily inducing diapycnal mixing.
