Merger Correspondences
Merger Correspondences is a phonological phenomenon in historical linguistics wherein two or more distinct phonemes in a language’s earlier stage converge into a single phoneme in a later stage, resulting in the loss of phonemic contrast and the establishment of systematic sound correspondences between related forms in descendant varieties.
