Manuscript Decoration

Manuscript Decoration is a codicological and art-historical category of intentional visual embellishment added to handwritten books or documents that, through devices such as colored initials, rubrication, borders, marginalia, and sometimes miniatures, enhances their aesthetic appearance while articulating, organizing, or emphasizing the structure and meaning of the written text.
