Latin Diglossia

Latin Diglossia is a sociolinguistic phenomenon in the historical study of Latin characterized by the coexistence of two distinct varieties of the language—Classical Latin and Vulgar Latin—used in different social and functional contexts, with Classical Latin serving as the high variety for formal, literary, and administrative purposes and Vulgar Latin as the low variety for everyday spoken communication.
