Internal Wave Breaking

Internal Wave Breaking is a physical process in stratified fluid dynamics wherein internal waves, propagating through density gradients in fluids such as the ocean or atmosphere, become unstable and dissipate their energy via turbulence, thereby enabling diapycnal mixing through the irreversible transfer of wave energy into small-scale shear-driven turbulent motions.
