Inpatient Commitment

Inpatient Commitment is a legal and clinical process within the broader framework of civil commitment, whereby an individual is formally detained in a psychiatric hospital or specialized mental health facility for mandatory evaluation, stabilization, or treatment due to a demonstrated risk of harm to self or others, distinguished from outpatient commitment by the requirement of 24-hour institutional supervision.
