Hydrostatic Approximation

Hydrostatic Approximation is a fundamental assumption in atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics, within the framework of the Primitive Equations, that the vertical pressure gradient force is exactly balanced by the gravitational force, thereby neglecting vertical acceleration and reducing the vertical momentum equation to a diagnostic, rather than prognostic, relation.
