The Hilbert Symbol is a bilinear pairing defined on the multiplicative group of a local field, taking values in the roots of unity, that encodes the solvability of a quadratic form and distinguishes itself by its role in local class field theory as an explicit invariant capturing the reciprocity law for local fields.
