Hecke Characters

A Hecke Character is a continuous homomorphism from the idele class group of a number field to the nonzero complex numbers, distinguished by its algebraic nature and finite-order behavior at archimedean places, that generalizes Dirichlet characters and plays a central role in the theory of complex multiplication and L-functions.
