H I Self-Absorption is a radiative transfer phenomenon in radio astronomy whereby cold atomic hydrogen gas absorbs background 21 cm emission from warmer H I regions, distinguished by its role in revealing the presence and properties of low-temperature, neutral hydrogen clouds in the interstellar medium.
