First Dredge-up

First Dredge-Up is a stellar evolutionary process in red giant stars wherein the convective envelope deepens and penetrates the outer layers of the hydrogen-burning shell, leading to the first mixing of fusion-processed material (notably enhanced helium and nitrogen and depleted carbon) from the interior to the surface.
