Firn Compaction

Firn compaction is a physicochemical process within the cryosphere whereby loose, granular snow undergoes densification into glacier ice through intergranular deformation and bonding under the influence of overlying snow load and atmospheric conditions, distinguishing it from other firn processes by its role in reducing pore space and enabling mass transfer within the glacier mass balance system.
