Exoticism

Exoticism is a concept and critical framework investigating the representation and perception of cultures, places, or peoples as foreign, strange, or alluringly different from a dominant perspective. As an area of academic inquiry, it analyzes the historical, cultural, and political processes by which the 'other' is constructed through selective focus, idealization, or objectification, often reflecting power imbalances and contributing to the formation of identities and the justification of hegemonic structures. Its significance lies in understanding the dynamics of cultural representation, the negotiation of difference, and the legacy of colonialism and cross-cultural encounters.
