Equatorial Wave Instability

Equatorial Wave Instability is a dynamical phenomenon in atmospheric and oceanic sciences wherein equatorial waves, governed by the equatorial beta-plane approximation, exhibit exponential growth in amplitude due to instabilities arising from interactions between wave modes and background flow shear, stratification, or coupling with convection, distinguishing it from neutral or damped equatorial wave behavior.
