Epicyclic Approximation

Epicyclic Approximation is a mathematical model in galactic kinematics that describes the motion of stars near a circular orbit in a disk galaxy by approximating their trajectories as small oscillations (epicycles) superposed on the dominant circular motion, thereby simplifying the analysis of stellar orbits in axisymmetric gravitational potentials.
