Electoral Opening is a political process in which an authoritarian regime allows competitive elections for executive or legislative positions, thereby creating a formal institutional channel through which opposition actors can contest for power, distinguishing it from other forms of political liberalization by its specific focus on electoral contestation as a mechanism for potential regime change.
