Ekman Instability

Ekman Instability is a hydrodynamic instability arising within rotating stratified fluids when the vertical shear of horizontal velocity in an Ekman layer exceeds a critical threshold, leading to the breakdown of laminar flow and the spontaneous generation of large-scale turbulent eddies that disrupt the geostrophic balance.
