Dramatic Manicules

Dramatic Manicules is a scholarly construct within medieval performance studies that designates a symbolic gesture system—typically depicted in manuscript illuminations—through which heightened emotional or rhetorical emphasis is conveyed in dramatic representation, thereby distinguishing it from general gestural vocabulary by its ritualized and indexical function in narrative performance.
