Desert Palaces
Desert Palaces is an architectural phenomenon in early Islamic art and archaeology denoting a category of elite, palace-like complexes constructed by the Umayyad caliphs in semi-arid and marginal zones of the Levant, distinguished from urban palaces by their remote locations, hybrid spatial layouts combining Greco-Roman, Persian, and nascent Islamic elements, and multifunctional roles encompassing administrative, residential, agricultural, and symbolic purposes.
