Controlled Substance Scheduling

Controlled Substance Scheduling is a legal-regulatory classification system in drug law that assigns psychoactive substances and related chemicals to graded “schedules” based on criteria such as accepted medical use, potential for abuse, and risks of dependence or harm, thereby determining the applicable controls and sanctions governing their manufacture, distribution, possession, and use.
