Constitutional Undercooling

Constitutional undercooling is a thermodynamic instability phenomenon in solidification processes wherein the actual temperature gradient in the liquid ahead of the solid–liquid interface becomes less than the equilibrium temperature gradient due to solute rejection, creating an undercooled region that promotes morphological instability and non-uniform growth of the solidification microstructure.
