Character Release is a phenomenon in evolutionary ecology, belonging to the broader class of character displacement processes, wherein a species exhibits an expansion or reversal of its ecological niche or morphological trait expression in the absence of a closely related competing species, thereby revealing previously suppressed phenotypic plasticity or genetic potential.
