Castration Complex

The "Castration Complex" is a psychoanalytic construct denoting a child’s unconscious anxiety, arising during the phallic stage of psychosexual development, that the same-sex parent will punish sexual desires toward the opposite-sex parent by inflicting genital mutilation, thereby serving as a pivotal mechanism in the resolution of the Oedipus complex and the formation of the super-ego.
