Caries Affected Dentin

Caries Affected Dentin is a distinct layer of softened, demineralized dentin located beneath the surface zone of a carious lesion that retains much of its structural integrity and collagen matrix but exhibits altered optical properties and increased porosity due to bacterial acid byproducts, distinguishing it from both healthy dentin and the more extensively degraded caries-infected dentin at the advancing front of the lesion.
