Membrane-Coated Nanomedicine era
Liangfang Zhang's group at UC San Diego emerged as a central authority in membrane-coated nanoparticles, demonstrating red blood cell and cancer cell membrane cloaks that suppress immune clearance and enhance tumor homing. Renfeng Fang, a frequent collaborator, helped establish RBC membrane cloaks and showed how native stealth translates into prolonged circulation and increased tumor accumulation. Diego Dehaini and Wei Gao extended the approach to platelet and other cell membranes, enabling programmable surface phenotypes and more selective tumor vasculature targeting while preserving immune evasion. Across this era, these researchers fused membrane cloaks with modular, stimuli-responsive designs and high-capacity carriers such as metal-organic frameworks, enabling smarter cargo loading and controllable intratumoral release for cancer nanotherapies.
