Band Inversion

Band inversion is a phenomenon in the electronic band structure of solids wherein the usual energetic ordering of valence and conduction bands at a high-symmetry point in the Brillouin zone is reversed due to strong spin-orbit coupling or other interactions, leading to topologically nontrivial states characteristic of topological insulators and related materials.
