As part of the general Maxwell River survey carried out by a team from the archaeology section of the Tasmanian Department of Lands, Parks and Wildlife (Harris et al. 1988) one of us (D.R.) excavated a small test pit into the floor of one of the sites discovered. The excavated material was subsequently partly sorted by volunteers in Hobart and in 1988 transferred for analysis to the La Trobe Archaeology Department, where it became part of the data base of the Southern Forests Archaeological Project. While analysis of the material will continue, we offer here a brief description of the materials from the site and report a series of five radiocarbon dates now available.
