This book contains extended abstracts of papers presented at the ASCE Specialty Conerence on probabilistic methods held in Blacksburg, Virginia on May 25-27, 1988. The field of probabilistic methods in civil engineering has matured impressively in recent years and the significance of probabilistic approaches to analysis and design is well accepted by the profession. Civil engineers are the leaders in developing stochastic analysis techniques. These papers examine state of the art methods of probabilistic engineering mechanics. Structural and geotechnical problems are emphasized. Both traditional areas such as random vibration and structural reliability, and emerging fields such as expert systems and stochastic finite elements are covered.
