Children's play, games, toys are particularly illuminating in providing a glimpse of history echoing the consciousness of a people. According to Freud (1950), children repeat, in their play, things which have made impressions on them from real life, and that in so doing they abreact the strength of the impression and. . . make themselves master of the situation. At the same time, the play of children reflects a wish to be grown up, to perform as adults do (Freud, 1 950: 16-17).
