Recent research into the behavior of expansive clays has led to rational procedures for quantifying swell and skrinkage and differential movements in expensive subgrades. These procedures, used in conjuntion with modern numerical techniques for analyzing the static interaction of foundations and soils, have permitted the development of rational foundation design procedures that can be employed in a design office. This paper surveys recent advances in these areas and summarizes the salient features of some of the more prominent studies.
