Abstract

Unstable or self-excited vibration of high-performance turbomachinery in the form of whirling or whipping at one of the rotor's natural frequencies below the running speed can cause considerable problems. While some major uncertainties persist with regard to the forces that cause unstable motion, some of the factors involved are known; both types are reviewed in this article. Some design measures that can be adopted to avoid the problem are suggested.
