Analytical monitoring of existing photovoltaic (PV) systems in Singapore (~1°20’N, 103°40’E) was performed for a period of one year (January-December 2011). The performance ratios (PR) and associated losses were analyzed in detail. Simulation of the various loss mechanisms was conducted for each system using own software, yielding results versus empirical data with errors of less than 2%. Further reduction of system losses were simulated and eventually realized in a demonstration system, showing that careful optimization can lead to highperforming PV systems in tropical regions of the world.
