The design of statistical procedures to monitor and control the variability of production processes has received comparatively little attention in the literature. This paper considers the use of a standard deviation Control Chart for this purpose. The derivation and some special features of economically optimal procedure designs are outlined. On the basis of one such feature, a simple scheme for the determination of approximately optimal designs is devised—the optimality criterion assumed is that of maximizing the long-run average profit per produced item.
