Interstitial cells express a number of genes whose products may have functional significance for heart valves. These include members of the contractile apparatus such as MHC and troponins. The presence of members of the frizzled family, which specify the orientation of cell polarization, in these cells could indicate that interstitial cells are not randomly arranged in the valve tissue. Therefore, interstitial cells isolated from the human heart valves express a number of functionally important genes, suggesting a role in their specialized function.
